Internet Marketing – A Lesson on Article Marketing

Article marketing is a simple and effective way to drive traffic to your website. It is inexpensive and permanent. Once your article is out there, it stays out there; unlike advertising that goes away when you stop paying for it.

The first step to article marketing is to define your target market. Who are they what are there problems. For instance this article is targeting people who are learning Internet marketing. Then you want to put your article in front of those people.

There are a few ways to do this. The most important method is through keyword research. A keyword is a question that is typed into a search engine when looking for a certain thing. Every article will be built around a keyword specific to the content of the article. Just think about what you would type into a search engine if you were looking for the information in your article. I cover keyword research more thoroughly in another segment.

Another method is by using social media sites to build relationships with people in your target market, and provide them with a link to your content. The use of social media will also be covered in another segment.

Put your keyword in the article title, and in three or four places in the article body. You want it to be natural; don’t just throw it in there randomly. It needs to make sense. This way when someone searches for that keyword your article has a chance of showing up in the search engine organic results.

When I am asked, “will you teach me Internet marketing?” I always give an article marketing lesson as part of the course, because it is simple, easy to do, and can be implemented right away.

The next step is choosing a topic. Choose a topic that you can, in some way, relate to what you are marketing. The key here is to provide value. Give away your best tips, tricks, and secrets. If you give your audience some thing of value they will be more interested in what you have to offer.

Some examples of article topics are, how-to articles, review articles, and problem and solution articles.

A how-to article teaches the reader how to do something. A review article reviews your product or service you are marketing or something related. A problem and solution article defines a common problem that your target market has, and then provides a solution.

One method of writing your article is to create an out line by listing the three to five main points you want to make. Then write a few sentences about each point. Each of your points will be the beginning of a paragraph and the sentences are the body of the paragraph.

Write an opening paragraph introducing the topic, and a final paragraph summing up the topic.

Provide a call to action. This is where you tell your reader what you want them to do. Some article distribution sites will require that this part be separate from the main article and will provide a resource box for this information. Put in your name, your website URL and tell your audience what you want them to do. For example “Click on my website and see what I have to offer”.

The last step is to distribute your article. One place to do this is You can also do a search for ‘article distribution sites’ and find more options.

So here it is again:

1. Choose your target audience.
2. Choose your keyword.
3. Choose your topic.
4. Choose your title (with the keyword in it).
5. Write your article.
6. Include a call to action.
7. Distribute your article.

Lastly, and most importantly, take massive action. Don’t write one article and expect to start getting a ton of traffic. Set a goal to write ten articles per week. This will help you build up momentum.
